DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR

   State of the art S-band Doppler Weather Radar of M/s Metstar make is capable of weather surveillance upto 250km (maxmum upto 500km) around Hyderabad. It provides imageries derived from volume scan depicting location and intensities of clouds, expected rainfall from these clouds, horizontal winds, wind shear etc. The imageries are a very good tool for weather analysis and forecasting. They are automatically updated to IMD’s website at 10 minutes interval.

 

AGRICULTURAL ADVISORY BULLETINS:

Agrometeorological Advisory Unit was established in 1987

to extend meteorological services to the farming community

 in the state.

Agrometeorological Advisory Unit is regularly issuing

Bi-weekly Agromet Advisory Bulletins on every Monday

and Thursday in co-ordination with the State Agricultural

Dept., Govt. of Andhra Pradesh for the benefit of the

farming community in the state.  

The unit issues Bi-weekly District forecast valid for

succeeding five days for the  7 Agro-Climatic Zones

covering all the 23 districts in the state in co-ordination

with Acharya N.G. Ranga Agriculturural University, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. This Unit also issues

Bi-weekly Bi-Lingual Agro-meteorological and Agriculture Bulletins on Tuesday and Friday in collaboration with the

State Agriculture Department. Bulletin reflects the

Significant past Weather phenomena prevailed and the

forecast with Heavy Rainfall Warnings, is any. The

 department of Agriculture, Andhra Pradesh provides the

inputs regarding Crop condition along with the Pets &

Diseases and remedies to be followed to prevent them.

These bulletins are transmitted to media viz. AIR,

 Doordarshan for broadcast in local language for use of

 farmers and other user agencies.

CLIMATOLOGY:

Climatological section at Hyderabad organize the scrutiny and archival of past meteorological data and maintains the database for   answering various weather related enquiries. This data have wide applications and are utilized for planning large-scale national development projects both by public andprivate. Meteorological observatories and rain gauges are periodically inspected by the inspectorate section to ensure well functioning and accuracy of Meteorological instruments

 

State Instruments Maintenance Centre (SIMC)

 

SIMC was formed in 2010 for the purpose of inspection

 and maintenance of all instruments installed at various observatories in AP including Automatic Weather Stations/Automatic Rain Gauges. It oversees the functioning

 and activities of Zonal Maintenance Units and Field Maintenance Units located in AP.

History

 

The old observatory was started in Hyderabad on 10th November 1891 , in the   Nizamiah  observatory building located on the top of the ridge.  Later  it  was shifted to old  Begumpet airport in 1926.  The observatory was  upgraded  as ‘Meteorological  Centre’ in  1973  to extend meteorological services to state.

METEOROLOGICAL CENTRE, HYDERABAD maintains 29 surface observatories (17 departmental and 12 part-time), 4 pilot balloon observatories,  3 Radiosonde/Rawin observatories,    5 Agricultural observatories, 35 Automatic Weather Stations, 64 Automatic Rain Gauges and 460 Rain Gauge stations managed by State Govts.

 

Services provided

WEATHER FORECASTING:

Daily a main bulletin is issued at 2 pm based on 03 GMT

data  which contains forecast for Andhra Pradesh and

Telangana states for next  7 days, Heavy  Rainfall

warning,  position of the Low Pressure system if any,

 local (city) forecast for 15 cities and Outlook for

subsequent 7 days along with the summary of

 weather phenomena occurred (Daily weather report).

Apart from this there is a weekly bulletin

 (Weekly Weather Report) is also issued on every Thursday

 which contains summary of previous week

(Thursday to Wednesday).

 

Weekly Wx Summary and Annual Flood Reports are also prepared.

 

Weather Observations at Hyderabad

1.      Synoptic Observation : Round the clock observation

of weather on surface.

2.     Pilot Balloon Observation: Upperair Winds

observation at 0600 UTC and 1800 UTC.

3.     Radiosode Observation: GPS based upperair

observation or Atomospheric Pressure, Temperature,

 Humidity, Wind Speed and Wind Direction at 0000 utc

 and 1200 utc.

4.     Doppler Radar Observation: Round the clock

 automatic observation with updates every 10 minutes.

5.     Radiation Observation: Automatic and Manual

observation of Global, Diffused, Terrestrial, Direct (solar),

Ultra Violet radiation.

6.     Automatic Weather Station observation.

 

AVIATION:

Weather information are provided  to ATC and all

Airlines at Rajiv Gandhi International Aerodrome,

Shamshabad and  at Begumpet aerodrome which

 include upper air winds, temperatures, significant

weather (SIG Wx) charts, Aerodrome Warnings,

Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts, METARs and SIGMETs.

CYCLONE WARNING:

Cyclone warnings are disseminated well in advance to all concerned.

FLOOD METEOROLOGICAL FORECAST

Flood Meteorological office at Hyderabad issues Daily

   Bulletins for Godavari & Krishna river basins covering

six states and of 5,73,858 sq Km. basin area during flood

 season (June to October) including synoptic situations,

 spatial distribution rainfall forecast for each sub-basin,          Heavy Rainfall Warnings along with

realized rainfall, Forecasts are issued to Central

 Water Commission, Hyderabad.Quantitative

 Precipitation Forecasts are also issued for the sub-basins

 under flood situation / Heavy Rainfall events.

 

DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR MAINTENANCE & TRAINING CENTER(DWRMTC)The DWRMTC inaugurated on 24th August,

2011 is meant for imparting :

(i)                   Basic training on Doppler Weather Radars

(ii)                  Operation and Maintenance training for operators and maintenance engineers of IMD posted at METSTAR make radars

(iii)                 Refresher training to Operators and Maintenance staff of IMD

(iv)                 Refresher training to Users/Weather forecasters

(v)                  Short term workshops for Users/Operators/ Maintenance personnel

Apart form training, Maintenance activities of METSTAR radars will be centrally controlled and guided from DWRMTC.
